Dopamine is wonderful. But contemplation is where success comes from. This is what I've learned. You know, I love action. I love urgency. I love momentum. I love making things happen. But when does that go from being busy and getting stuff done to becoming frantic? You know, the feeling when you just get kind of overwhelmed with input, and you just need time to sit and rest.
And obviously, in today's society, it's more difficult than ever to find that. I am convinced again and again that to solve this as business leaders, owners, founders, and CEOs, we need daily times of reflection, weekly times of reflection, and monthly times of reflection where we can sit down, look back, look forward, and examine what is going on.
Christians back in the old days used to call this the process of examine or contemplation. And I think this is very, very necessary for creativity. In fact, a friend of mine, a CEO, said, "Hey, when you come across a burning bush,"—he was talking about Moses and the burning bush—"don't walk by. Stop and have faith that God will help us figure it out. He always does." I think it's a great quote.
We need to take time to rest, to slow down, and also to set aside time to think about the difficult things, to review them, and to contemplate them. It is in that, that we will find creativity and a source of stronger leadership.
